Thank you to all our students and families for another great school year! We hope you all have a restful and relaxing summer break. Report cards will be mailed out the week of June 24. They include the following short newsletter: Summer School 2018 will be held at F.H. Collins Secondary School from June 18 – July 13 and is available for English and Mathematics courses, Chemistry 11 and Science 10, to improve current course marks. You can find Summer School enrollment forms and the time schedule posted on the Department of Education’s website, http://www.education.gov.yk.ca/summer-school.html.
If it has been recommended that your student attend summer school, you should be advised by your child’s teacher by the end of the week. ![]() Vanier Catholic Secondary School music program would like to acknowledge Lotteries Yukon for providing travel funding to assist us in performing at this year’s Juneau Jazz and Classics Festival. Students performed for world class musicians, both Juneau High Schools and at the top of the Mount Roberts Tramway. Students were also exposed to some of the best jazz and classical music in some of the most beautiful venues in North America. Our prayers go out to the families and friends of the young people who were tragically killed in a motor vehicle accident on Hamilton Boulevard on May 13. We also pray for the repose of the souls of those who died and healing for the others involved.
At this time (May 14) we are not aware of any direct connection between this accident and the Vanier Catholic Secondary school community. As Yukon is small and tightly knit, we are sure that this accident will have an impact within our community - our school counsellors are available to provide support to anyone who requires it. In addition, Skookum Jim Friendship Centre is also offering counselling support for the public: A counsellor will be available on-site (3159 3rd Ave, Whitehorse) during the following dates and times (closed 12-1 for lunch): Tuesday, May 14 - 8:30-4:30 Wednesday, May 15 - 9:00-4:30 Thursday, May 16 - 9:00-3:00 Friday, May 17 - 9:00-4:30 We are saddened by the news of the death of Jean Vanier. Our school is named after the Vanier family, of which Jean was the second youngest child. After a career in the Canadian Navy, he left to study philosophy. In 1964, he invited two individuals who would have normally been institutionalized due to their disabilities to live with him. This started a movement that led to dozens more similar homes being created throughout the world. Jean Vanier was a model of service to others - especially the most vulnerable members of our community.
