Dear Parents and Students,
We hope you had a great long weekend and that the extra day provided lots of time for family and friends and renewal. We are in the home stretch for school and everyone is busy and working hard. Please reach out if you have a concern or need help with anything. We want this year to end as successfully as possible for everyone! As this school year draws closer to the end, let us be mindful of those who are under great stress, who have anxiety, who are far away from loved ones, and who are lonely and uncertain about the future. We are about to complete a school year that is unlike any other. There was no road map, no advice, no amount of prediction that could truly guide us this year. Hopefully, everyone in our community is practicing self-compassion and compassion for those around them. Here is a prayer for all of us: God of the present moment, God who in Jesus stills the storm and soothes the frantic heart; bring hope and courage to all who wait or work in uncertainty. Bring hope that you will make them the equal of whatever lies ahead. Bring them courage to endure what cannot be avoided, for your will is health and wholeness; you are God, and we need you. - Adapted from New Zealand Prayer Book, p. 765 Week-At-A-Glance: Monday May 24
News Items for the Week: National Science Fair Winner Congratulations to Gavin Howells! Gavin is in grade 11 at Vanier and has been involved with science and science fairs for many years now. Gavin has won many awards for his work at regional and national science fairs and just last week was awarded a gold medal for his science fair project (A Novel Evaluation of the Mutagenicity of E-cigarette Liquid and Vapour on Yeast Cells) in the senior category at the virtual Canada Wide Science Fair (CWSF). Gavin is the first Yukon student to win a gold medal in the senior category (grade 11/12) at the CWSF. We are very proud of Gavin for this accomplishment and for turning his research into action. Gavin has been teaching lessons to many community schools through Zoom on the health effects of e-cigarette use. Safer Driving Needed! We have been discussing driving habits with some of our students the past 2 weeks. Students must obey speed limits and sensible and safe driving in the parking lots of our school. Beside the obvious risks, students need to understand that there are several elementary schools near Vanier and that we must safely share the road with all the residents of Riverdale. We will be contacting parents this week if our initial conversations do not seem to take effect. Exam Schedules We are in the final process of editing the exam schedules. They should be posted on our website by the end of Wednesday. Thank you for your patience. Regarding exams and attendance - we are running a very tight exam week this year so that students have the maximum class time before their exams. This means there is almost no room for students to make up an exam if they miss it. Students must be in attendance for their exams on the day and time it is scheduled. If a student is so sick that they cannot attend, a parent must call in before 8:45 that morning. Please contact us if you have any questions or concerns. Have a great week, Katrina Brogdon, Principal and Alethea Wallace, Vice-Principal Dear Parents and Students,
Welcome to another busy week at Vanier. May is flying by and everyone is working hard to finish assignments and make sure they are caught up and prepared for June exams. As always, please reach out to teachers if you are feeling lost or behind. The counsellors and learning assistance teachers are here to help you and there is always help in the senior and junior skills rooms. This can be a time of stress and anxiety for some students, so please let us know if you need help. Putting off assignments or not attending school may seem like a well needed break, but it usually results in being more stressed in the long run. Be patient with yourself and each other, remain hopeful and know that there is a lot of help if you need it. Prayer for the week: Creator God, Life gets busy. Help me to make time for You. Help me to develop and follow through with a consistent practice that intentionally build relationship with You. Amen. “Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.” Romans 12:12 Week-At-A-Glance: Monday May 17

Over $2,300 was raised during that time. Thank you to everyone who donated all the beautiful items for the auction, the students and teachers who reached out to the community and to our grad teacher advisors for setting it all up and running the auction. A special shout out to Melissa Craig, our financial administrator at Vanier who helped set up the money transfers and who cheerfully takes in all the fundraising money for all groups at school and makes sure we all stay on budget. It is often a thankless job, so next time you see Melissa - give her a nice shout out! Also… Grads get your baby pictures to Mr. Gillard now! The British queen was born on May 24, 1819. She was a reigning monarch (Queen) for 63 years, seven months and two days. Victoria Day was declared a Canadian holiday by the government in 1845. At that time, it was celebrated with picnics, parades, sporting tournaments, fireworks and cannon salutes. When Queen Victoria died in 1901, Canada’s parliament officially named the holiday Victoria Day. It was decided that the day would be celebrated on the second last Monday in May. In 2021, that's May 24th. In 1952, the government made the decision to begin celebrating Victoria Day on a Monday. It would be observed on May 24th if that worked out. Otherwise, it would be held on the Monday right before it. Today, Victoria Day is a holiday throughout most of Canada. The day is usually marked in most cities with parades, outdoor events and activities like camping and firework displays. Today, it might be marked in different ways that allow people to keep a safe distance. That could be virtually online, on television or as a family in the back yard. Thanks to CBC kids for the information CBC kids Have a good week, Katrina Brogdon, Principal and Alethea Wallace, Vice-Principal Dear Parents and Students,
The school year is winding down, but we are still very busy at Vanier. With the sun being out and the nice weather greeting us every day, we should all take advantage of the season. Having some time to study can be a challenge when the sun is out, but this is the time to put in all your effort to finish your courses with success and confidence. Please reach out for help if you are struggling-we have lots of resources available for you. So we can say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper, so I will have no fear…” ~Hebrews 13:6 Dear Lord, I will not be anxious about my circumstances because I choose to put all my faith and trust in you. You will never let me down because you are always faithful. Amen. Week-At-A-Glance: Monday May 10

Summer School We have been told there will be summer school running this year. Typically students are able to complete math or English courses they have attempted throughout the year and earned at least a 40% mark in. We do not know at this point exactly which courses will be offered or the format it will be offered in, but as we find out details, we will pass the information along to you. First Nations Education Directorate Nutrition Programs Feast A big thank you goes out to the First Nations Education Directorate for providing the entire school with a delicious feast last Friday. The food was plentiful, healthful and expertly prepared. Thanks to the organizers at FNED and to Ms. Wallace who made all the arrangements at the school. Well done! It looks like Spring is finally here! More students are going outside on nice days which is great. We should all be going outside during the day. Please encourage your child to go outside at lunch. We all need natural light and fresh air to be our best. It really does make a difference. We only have 6 weeks of school left (including this week!). There is a lot of support available for students to finish strong this year. Please encourage them to contact the student support teachers, the Learning Assistance teachers and the counsellors if they feel they need extra help. A reminder to parents: Grade 8 and 9 students must be up to date with their assignments to have early dismissal on Wednesday. They must check with all of their teachers before the early dismissal time. Prayer for the week: Dear Lord, Thank you for the gift of faith in you that you have blessed me with. I will continue to put all my trust in you. And Jesus said to him, “Go, for your faith has healed you.” Instantly the man could see, and he followed Jesus down the road. ~Mark 10:52 Week-At-A-Glance: Monday May 3

After an unusually busy week last week, all the hard work has paid off. We have all of our students at school for full days now. There are still firm Covid prevention measures in place, but it is very nice to see all our senior students back in school. The longer classes are giving teachers time to work with every student in class. Teachers are able to check on progress and answer questions in person. Grade 10-12 teachers are reporting that they are enjoying the double blocks every day to spend more time with their students. This is a time to give a big thank you to all the teachers and educational assistants who worked tirelessly on Thursday and Friday to move furniture, set up classrooms, and prepare for the big changes. A special thanks also goes to our Office Administrator, Alex Sullivan. Alex did all of the computer work to meld classes and get the attendance program ready for the full day program. It was a big job! This week includes Earth day so let’s reflect on our blessings, our clean air and water, and the beautiful environment that is our Yukon home. Professional Development Day - Friday April 30th. Please mark your calendars – this is a no students at school day for Vanier. Report Cards And Student Led Conferences – Thank You! Thank you to all the parents who were able to attend the Student Led Conferences last week. For those of you who were not able to attend, your child’s report card was sent home in the mail. If you would still like to meet with your child’s teachers, please contact them and arrange a time. Warmer Weather Means Get Some Sunshine! With our warmer days we really want our students to get some time outside, especially at lunch time. A lot of grade 8 and 9 students are still spending most or all of their lunch break inside and on their phones. Please encourage your child to get outside now that we have warm weather. It is healthier and better for keeping alert and awake after lunch. Tutoring Because of the senior students going back to full time studies, any lunch time tutoring that was happening between a senior student and a junior student can no longer be accommodated. If the junior would still like to receive tutoring, they are encouraged to talk to Ms. Cann to make alternate arrangements to see what else can be made available. Have a good week, Katrina Brogdon, Principal and Alethea Wallace, Vice-Principal Dear Parents and Students, Today is election day. I would like to take a minute to say a prayer of thanks for living in such a peaceful and safe country where even our most heated political debates rarely end in violence or tragedy. I am thankful for our democratic process and the trust that smooth transitions in leadership happen at all levels of government. We have a very busy week. Student led conferences, literacy and numeracy exams, and the work that must take place for the transition to full days for senior students are but a few things happening at Vanier this week. I look forward to seeing you all at our Student Led Conferences on Wednesday and Thursday. Prayer Dear Lord, Thank you for the gifts of freedom, democracy and peace. Help us to never take our privileges for granted and help us to be better members of our community. He has told you what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God? Micah 6:8 Week-At-A-Glance: Monday April 12

Back to School Full Days for Grades 10-12 Starts Monday, April 19th There is a bell schedule/timetable posted below for parents or students who missed it in last weeks email. We have copies of this form for all grade 10-12 students if they wish to have one. Since our bell schedule has not changed, students should be well acquainted with our schedule. Senior School Bells School starts at 8:45 Lunch is from 11:25-12:35 Afternoon class starts at 12:35. We dismiss grades 10-12 at 3:15. We made the decision at Vanier to keep our long lunch so that senior students will have time to meet with their teachers, meet with counsellors or learning assistance tutors or access resources in the learning commons. Because we will have around 20 minutes of overlapping times for our junior and senior lunch, we will be asking grade 10-12 students to vacate the cafeteria by 12:00 so that tables can be cleaned and made ready for the grade 8-9 students. School Name Change We have only received a few suggestions for the school name change. It’s not too late! Please see the attachment with information regarding the name change suggestion process. Please send your form to : [email protected]

Welcome back to school! Hopefully everyone had a restful spring break. Time will fly by now- only 10 weeks of school left for the year. Let’s make sure everyone makes good use of that time. This is Holy Week- Christians observe this special time as the centre of their faith. We will have a Stations of the Cross Liturgy on Wednesday and Friday and next Monday are school holidays. John 3:16: "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." We are still waiting on confirmed dates. Our best prediction is that the transition will happen sometime in mid-April. At this time, students remain on their current half-day schedules. We will pass on information as soon as we are able. Week-At-A-Glance: Monday March 29
