Hello Vanier School Community,
I’m sorry to everyone for I may not have communicated the news about tomorrow’s School-Closed Day. There is no school Friday, May 20 and Monday, May 23. Friday is off in exchange for the Student-Led Conferences. Monday is the 203rd anniversary of Queen Victoria’s birth. Enjoy the long weekend! Kyle Janzen VCSS Principal There will be a School Council meeting at 7:00 pm on zoom.
Click below for information on how to join the meeting. Greetings,
I hope that all is well with you and your family. Christ is risen, death is defeated, and the weather is improving. Things are all pointing in the right direction! News We have been experiencing an unusually frequent number of damaged laptop computers. Sure, some computers get worn out or need an upgrade, but this is different. This vandalism involves peeling off the keys and re-arranging them or leaving them off altogether. Unacceptable, I’m sure you will agree. Further, these repairs are shockingly expensive – often at $400 per computer. Anyone nostalgic for the old days? We will have to review our reliance on computers. Another problematic issue at Vanier continues to be the food card program. Turns out that some students are passing their cards along to other students who don’t have one. Ultimately, I don’t think it matters as the intent of the program was to feed hungry students, but for accounting and general comportment, we’ll need to look at this. If your child requires a food card, please contact the office. Enrollment for Grades Eight and Nine is full. We will likely have some spaces, but as we do have a protocol, and the order goes like this: Catholic students with siblings, Catholic students, students with siblings, and then others. The time of application only matters when all other criteria are equal. We simply do not have the room. Enough bad news… Monday, May 2 is a PD Day. Teachers will be up at Mt. Mac with other teachers and staff from the Catholic Schools of Whitehorse. Please, students, stay home on Monday. Sunday, May 1 the Catholic Education Association of Yukon is inviting all staff, students and families to attend mass at Sacred Heart at 10:30. Council members will be on hand and refreshments will be served afterward. The Grad Retreat is scheduled for May 16th. Grade 12s will be going downtown for activities and a scavenger hunt and then back to Riverdale for some bowling. Students will need to submit their signed consent forms ASAP! The yearbook class lead by professional photographer Ben van Klaveren has been busy capturing Vanier student life all year. Order your 2022 Yearbook online now by scanning the below QR code (or visit Jostens.com), selecting guarantee your copy, and choosing Vanier Catholic Secondary School from the list. There, you will be able to order the Yearbook for 40$. Be sure to get all orders in by May 14th! Don't miss out on the memories your child will cherish for years to come! School Council for Vanier was acclaimed this time. No election is necessary. Those new council members begin their two-year term in the fall. They are Monica Best, Marlon Davis, Desiree Martsinkiw, and Tyler White. Congratulations. Thanks to the outgoing school council. Finally, It’s a crazy ol’ world, isn’t it? Take care of yourselves, your family, and praise God every day. Blessings, Kyle Janzen, VCSS Principal Attention parents/guardians, the yearbook class lead by professional photographer Ben van Klaveren has been busy capturing Vanier student life all year. Enrollments for Next Year We are proving a popular option. We are full up for both our grade 8 and 9 cohorts for the 2022/2023 school year. Lent Liturgy This is a whole school event at 11:00 on Tuesday, March 29 in the small gym. All are welcome! Breakfast/Lunch Program We have had to scale back considerably the food program sponsored by YFNED. We've gone over a few ideas on how to move forward. What we had figured, tickets, was determined to be unworkable. Now, we are going with green ten-punch cards for breakfast and lilac-coloured ten-punch cards for lunch. In order to receive these cards, students must be either Indigenous or in-need as determined by parents. Parents can send an email to [email protected] for students to get cards. Immunizations Grades 9 and 10 will have the opportunity to catch up on their immunizations, specifically Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis (Tdap) booster, and Meningococcal Quadrivalent on Thursday, March 31. Because of COVID, many current grade 10s missed their immunization. There is a consent process in place. You can go here: https://yukonimmunization.ca/diseases-vaccines/grade-6-9-school-based-immunization#Grade9. Written consent is a good idea, but this is how the above website explains consent: Consent for immunizations Consent to health care under the Care Consent Act, applies to a person of any age. That means that a person of any age can consent to their own health care as long as they are capable of understanding and appreciating the consequences of that decision.(s.6 (4) CCA) For the grade 9 immunization program, efforts will be first made to obtain parental/representative consent. If a student presents with or without parent/representative consent, it is the health care provider's professional responsibility to inform them about their right to provide consent on their own behalf despite the consent/refusal to consent given by the parent(s). Student Led Conferences, Report Cards, and Survey Report Cards are due into the office by Monday, April 4, so we should be able to get them out by the end of next week. We had scheduled Student-Led Conferences for Thursday, April 14, but then realized this is Maunday Thursday. So, we have rescheduled the Student-Led Conferences to Thursday, April 21 from 3:30 - 7:00 PM. We also moved the OurSchool Survey to the week of April 19-22. This is an online tool that will give students the opportunity to provide input about their experience here at Vanier. Finally, I have let the School Council, Superintendent and staff know that I will decline the role of Principal of Vanier for next year. This is a personal decision. Thank you for your support. Rest assured I will do all I can to ensure a smooth transfer and that all things are in place for the next school year. Blessings, Kyle Janzen, Principal VCSS |
